I co-founded the Echo Park Time Travel Mart, acting as a combination Creative and Artistic Director on the project. In this position I developed the initial concept for the store and formulated the EPTTM’s look and brand, then devised and implemented a year-long strategy to actually make it happen. I created over 200 products for dozens of fictional brands, writing both the copy and a detailed design brief for each one. In collaboration with an architect and a graphic designer, I oversaw the construction of the EPTTM’s interior spaces as well as the assembly of every product. I knocked down walls with a sledgehammer, buffed floors, scraped paint, applied for permits, bought industrial materials from flummoxed suppliers, and made dozens of surreptitious late-night “scouting trips” to 7-11 for inspiration and caffeine. And we opened right on schedule.
The Echo Park Time Travel Mart is the world’s leader in convenience retailing for time travelers, with branches in every major time period from the Big Bang to the Omega Point. The EPTTM sells everything you need for a road trip through the fourth dimension: robot emotions, chain mail, and snacks, snacks, snacks! You can visit the EPTTM online, or at its brick and mortar location at 1714 Sunset Blvd. (The EPPTM is open every day from 12pm – 6pm, 2007 – 2482.)
Since its opening in January, 2007, the EPTTM has been featured in the LA Times, Gizmodo, Boing Boing, Travel + Leisure, Good Magazine, io9, Laughing Squid, the Not For Tourist Guides, and numerous other publications. Products from the EPTTM were selected for the 2010 California Design Biennial, presented at the Pasadena Museum of Art.
